Easter is right around the corner, and when it comes to this spring holiday, dying eggs is one of our favorite childhood memories. Instead of store-bought kits and food coloring packets, let your little ones get involved in creating natural dyes from common fruits, vegetables and spices.
What You’ll Need:
• Yellow: Turmeric powder, curry powder
• Dark Purple: Red cabbage (boiled), grape juice
• Pale Blue/Lavender: Red cabbage (boiled)
• Pink: Beets (boiled)
• Red: Raspberries, pomegranate juice, cherries
Creating natural dyes is all about experimenting (and having fun!). For each color combination, you can choose to boil your eggs with the color ingredients, or boil beforehand. To create the dye, add ingredients to 1 tablespoon of distilled vinegar for every 2 cups of water used. Color will vary depending on the amount of foods you use and amount of time the eggs are left in the liquid. Play around with different ingredient combinations and find the colors that work for you!
